Have No Shame Book Blast

Book Synopsis:

The racially-charged prejudice of the deep South forces eighteen-year-old Alison Tillman to confront societal norms—and her own beliefs—when she discovers the body of a hate crime victim, and the specter of forbidden love turns her safe, comfortable world upside down.
Alison has called Forrest Town, Arkansas home for the past eighteen years. Her mother’s Blue Bonnet meetings, her father toiling night and day on the family farm, and the division of life between the whites and the blacks are all Alison knows. The winter of 1967, just a few months before marrying her high school sweetheart, Alison finds the body of a black man floating in the river, and she begins to view her existence with new perspective. The oppression and hate of the south, the ugliness she once was able to avert her eyes from, now demands her attention.
When a secretive friendship with a young black man takes an unexpected romantic turn, Alison is forced to choose between her predetermined future, and the dangerous path that her heart yearns for.
HAVE NO SHAME is an emotionally compelling coming of age novel featuring a young woman who cannot reconcile the life she wants with the one she’s been brought up to live.Have No Shame will resonate with anyone who has ever fallen in love, and those who have been forced to choose between what they know in their hearts to be true, and what others would like them to believe.

Review: Forever

Title: Forever
Author: Judy Blume
Release Date: April 24, 2007
Pages: 192
Rating: 4 owls

Goodreads Description:

Katherine and Michael meet at a New Year's Eve party. They're attracted to each other, they grow to love each other. And once they've decided their love is forever, they make love.

It's the beginning of an intense and exclusive relationship, with a future all planned. Until Katherine's parents insist that she and Michael put their love to the test with a summer apart...

"Forever" is written for an older age group than Judy Blume's other novels for children. It caused a storm of controversy when it was first published because of its explicit sexual content.

It was a book ahead of its time - and remains, after thirty years in print, a teenage best-seller. America's No. 1 children's author has written some of the best books of our time about real-life issues - family stress and pressures, what happens when your parents divorce, the problems of growing up and sexual awakening, bereavement - with insight, sensitivity and honesty.

My Thoughts:

Who did not love Judy Blume growing up? I sure did. When I saw this store in the bookstore I was so curious how I did not know that Judy Blume had a YA book out. I knew it was something I had to read.

Wow at the story line. I started this book and finished reading it the same night. I could not put it down. Don't you just love books like that?

If you cannot handle the sexual content I strongly suggest not reading it. It was not what I had expected, but it was a great read to say the least.

The story focuses on two 17 year olds, Katherine and Michael, who meet at a New Year's Eve party at her friend Sybil's house. They start dating and fall in love. Katherine is scared of what comes with loosing her virginity and when the right time will be. Michael is very persistent and constantly reassures her that he loves her and that's what people who love each other do. When the couple is separated at the start of the summer, because of their jobs...their love is really put to the test.

Judy Blume writes about the fears, emotions, and everything in between that comes with your first love. I was truly blown away by this book. If you have not read it, definitely make time for it. I am sure there are plenty of close-minded people about the book and its maturity level, but it is as close to real life as you can get. It is a very informative view of growing up mixed with sexuality.

Review: Meant To Be

Title: Meant To Be
Author: Lauren Morrill
Pages: 304
Release Date: November 13, 2012
Rating: 3 owls

Goodreads Description:

Meant to be or not meant to be . . . that is the question.

It's one thing to fall head over heels into a puddle of hazelnut coffee, and quite another to fall for the—gasp—wrong guy. Straight-A junior Julia may be accident prone, but she's queen of following rules and being prepared. That's why she keeps a pencil sharpener in her purse and a pocket Shakespeare in her, well, pocket. And that's also why she's chosen Mark Bixford, her childhood crush, as her MTB ("meant to be").

But this spring break, Julia's rules are about to get defenestrated (SAT word: to be thrown from a window) when she's partnered with her personal nemesis, class-clown Jason, on a school trip to London. After one wild party, Julia starts receiving romantic texts . . . from an unknown number! Jason promises to help discover the identity of her mysterious new suitor if she agrees to break a few rules along the way. And thus begins a wild goose chase through London, leading Julia closer and closer to the biggest surprise of all: true love.

Because sometimes the things you least expect are the most meant to be.

My Thoughts:

I loved the humor of this book, although I will say it took me quite a few chapters before I became really interested in the book.

The main characters of the book are awesome! Julia and Jason were the love story I completely did not see coming! Julia was such a goody who always followed the rules, but she was so funny! Jason was the complete opposite of Julia, instead of being the smart student always doing what should be done, he was the "bad boy" type! The part of the story that I adored was throughout the middle. Jason became Julia's "buddy" throughout the trip and turned her life upside down..not in a bad way either.

The plot of the story completely caught me off guard. I think that is what made me actually realize how much I did enjoy the book! It was not what I was expecting at all! I love the setting, falling in love while in London..how awesome is that??

I would recommend this book to someone for several reasons. Although I did not "love" the book, I did really enjoy it! It is definitely one to pick up!
