This is my first actual review so bare with me until I get the hang of it! I hope to improve all of my reviews with time and practice. I am still getting used to blogging!
Title: Alice in Zombieland
Author: Gena Showalter
Release Date: September 25, 2012
Pages: 404
Rating: 4 Owls
Goodreads Description:
Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.
Her father was right. The monsters are real….
To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….
I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.
My Thoughts:
First off, if you are thinking this book has anything to do with Alice in Wonderland, it does not. The story is about a young girl learning to deal with her new life after the loss of her father, mother, and little sister. Alice (known as Ali) is the "tough girl" type after she looses her family and is afraid to open up to anyone. She is starting to see the zombies, but is too afraid to tell anyone else in fear they will think she is crazy. Things change when Alice meets Kat, who does everything she can to get Alice to open up to her and be her new friend. Kat and Alice do become best friends and start to do everything together. Kat helps Alice adjust to her new life, including her new school. Then comes Cole, the total bad boy who Alice immediately has a connection with. For some reason the two cannot get enough of each other and even though they probably should, they cannot escape each other. Alice eventually learns that she is not the only one who can see zombies, but Cole and his friends can as well. They also know how to fight them and Alice is eager to learn how to fight them too.
I loved everything about Alice, Cole and Kat's characters. Alice was very hard to understand at first, but only because she was learning to cope with the loss of her family members. She eventually became very kind, friendly and funny! Her witty personality is what makes her easy to love. Cole is the bad boy, mysterious type. He does not have a lot of girls chasing after him, and the guys outside of his group cannot stand him. He is protective of Alice, but in a good way. Watching the relationship of him and Alice grow was one of my favorite things about the book. As for Kat, she is very humorous and has a strong, likable personality. She is a great friend to Alice from the start and stays by her side until the end of the book.
Overall, I loved this book. I loved the way the story played out and the way it ended (although it really surprised me)!! I won't give too much information because I do not want to have reviews that contain spoilers! I loved that the book did not leave you with a huge cliffhanger, but I am already ready to read the second book of the series. Once I reached the middle of the book I could not put it down. I love the way Showalter made the zombie story. It is different from the typical everyone sees the zombies and they are easy to get rid of. Not everyone can see these zombies, but the zombies can see and kill everyone. They are definitely harder to get rid of than typical zombies. I gave this book a four.

This is an impressive first review! I have read so many about this book, and all I read is gushing with no basis or reason behind it. I love when lead relationships are dynamic. It is always nice to see a fictional couple mature with each other.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work, Megan! Great start!
I really enjoyed this one as well. I loved that Gena Showalter didn't stick with the typical zombies and the characters were great.
ReplyDeleteFabulous first review. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for all of the sweet comments! Katie, I too loved that the zombies in this book were not the typical zombies. I will be having an interview post from Gena Showalter soon along with a giveaway. Make sure to follow me! :) Check back soon all of you!
